Welcoming a Brighter Tomorrow for Coastal Communities in Lombok & Sumbawa

As part of the world’s largest archipelagic nation, the ocean is not merely a source of livelihood; it is the lifeblood of the majority of the population across Lombok and Sumbawa Islands. However, despite this vast marine territory, Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries data (2025) indicates that over 70% of Indonesia's extraordinary maritime potential remains underutilized. Challenges in the coastal regions of Lombok and Sumbawa extend beyond resource management to include limited access for local communities to economic value creation, quality education, and adequate healthcare services.

Born from this reality, Brighter Tomorrow Foundation (ESOK) was established as a collaborative initiative to support human development and empower coastal communities in Lombok and Sumbawa in a sustainable, long-term manner. We believe that lasting change must begin with people. ESOK’s primary focus is to unlock greater opportunities for coastal youth to thrive through integrated access to education, talent development, health services, environmental stewardship, and local economic empowerment.

Initial Steps to Empowerment

The first step of this journey is anchored by dedicated operational support: a 30-hectare integrated site in Lakey, Dompu, Sumbawa Island. ESOK is establishing this physical hub to connect early childhood education, sports, healthcare, environmental conservation, tourism, media, and community-based micro-economies. In a region world-renowned for its legendary waves, we selected surfing as our initial point of engagement. This choice stems from the natural, organic connection between surfing and the daily lives of coastal youth in Lombok and Sumbawa. We recognize that elite athletes only emerge from healthy families with stable livelihoods. Likewise, great waves can only persist if beaches and marine ecosystems are protected. Through our surfing program, we integrate early childhood development, nutritional support, sports medicine, and character building, helping coastal children develop discipline, self-confidence, adaptability, and environmental consciousness from an early age.

Building a Sustainable Ecosystem

However, sports development is only the beginning. ESOK’s long-term vision is to foster self-reliant coastal ecosystems across Lombok and Sumbawa through human resource capacity building, environmental protection, and inclusive local economic drivers. The integration of this 30-hectare site is designed to synergize youth development, renewable energy adoption, and infrastructure supporting cold-chain logistics for fisheries, agriculture, and community-based eco-tourism. We believe in a fundamental cause-and-effect relationship: when family incomes stabilize and access to healthcare and education improves, coastal children no longer have to choose between helping support their households and pursuing their highest potential. ESOK exists to ensure human development, environmental preservation, and local economic strengthening progress hand-in-hand.

The Roots of Our Journey

This initiative is deeply rooted in our ancestral connection to West Nusa Tenggara. From the shores of Lombok and Sumbawa, we have learned that the future of coastal communities is not built by extracting more natural resources, but by creating greater value that returns directly to local communities. When human potential flourishes, ecosystems remain preserved, and local economies grow inclusively, a brighter tomorrow is no longer a distant dream, it becomes an inevitable reality we build together. Driven by good intentions, concrete asset backing, and a spirit of collaboration, we invite you to join us on this journey toward the future. Welcome to the dawn of prosperity for the coastal communities of Lombok and Sumbawa.
